Formula
Fuel gallons are the miles divided by economy. The trip adds the other costs:
total = miles / MPG × price + nights × nightly rate + meals
Fuel cost is rounded to the nearest cent before it is added. The fuel cost page is fuel alone. This page includes the night and the meals.
Assumptions
- Economy is miles per gallon for the whole distance.
- The gallon is a US gallon.
- Meals are one amount for the trip, not per day.
Worked example
600 miles at 30 mpg and $3.40 a gallon, plus 2 nights at $120 and $90 of meals, comes to $398.00.
Input definitions
- Meals
- Food for the whole drive, as one amount.
- Nights
- Lodging nights. Zero leaves lodging out.
Limitations
This is a trip sketch. Prices and rates are numbers you type. The currency control changes the symbol only and does not convert one currency into another.
Questions
Can I skip lodging?
Set nights to 0. The total is then fuel plus meals.
Where is fuel by itself?
On the fuel cost page. It does not ask for nights or meals.
