Formula
The tip is the bill times the percent, rounded to the nearest cent. Each share rounds the combined total divided by the number of people:
Tip = bill × tip percent
Each person’s share is the bill plus tip, divided by the group.
Assumptions
- Everyone pays an equal share.
- The tip percent applies to the full bill.
- Tax is included only if it is already in the bill.
Worked example
An $86.40 bill with an 18% tip is $15.55. Three people pay about $33.98 each.
Input definitions
- Bill
- The amount before the tip.
- People
- How many equal shares to make.
Limitations
Rounding each share to the nearest cent can differ by a cent from the exact total. Taxes and service charges must already be in the bill if you want them tipped.
Questions
Can the tip be zero?
Yes. The total then equals the bill, split across the group.
Does this add sales tax?
No. Enter a bill that already includes tax if the tip should be based on the taxed amount.
