Formula
The payment is the distance times the rate you type:
payment = distance × rate
The result is rounded to the nearest cent. This page does not look up a tax authority's standard mileage rate, and it does not convert miles into kilometers.
Assumptions
- The rate is an amount per one mile or one kilometer, in the currency you type.
- Every unit of distance uses that same rate.
- Tolls, parking, and fuel are not added on top.
Worked example
100 miles at $0.70 per mile pays $70.00.
Input definitions
- Distance
- The miles or kilometers being reimbursed.
- Rate
- The allowance for one of those units. It is not fetched from a tax table.
Limitations
Employers and tax authorities publish their own rates, and those rates change. Fuel cost is a different page: it uses economy and a fuel price rather than a mileage allowance.
Questions
Why is there no official cents-per-mile rate?
That figure changes by year and by who is paying. The rate you enter is the one that gets multiplied.
Does changing currency convert the allowance?
No. It changes the symbol only. Enter the rate in the currency you were given.
