Formula
The bonus is added to the 4.0 grade points, then credits do the weighting:
Weighted GPA = sum(credits × (grade points + bonus)) / sum(credits)
A regular course uses no bonus. An AP course in this example adds 1.
Assumptions
- Grade points start on a 4.0 scale.
- The bonus is 0, 0.5, or 1.
Worked example
A regular 4.0 and an AP 4.0, each worth 3 credits, make a weighted GPA of 4.5.
Input definitions
- Bonus
- Extra points for honors or AP, added to that course only.
- Credits
- How much the course counts.
Limitations
This is a planning estimate for school or a calendar. It is not an official transcript, an attendance record, or a payroll ruling.
Questions
Can the result be above 4?
Yes. An AP bonus can push a course to 5.0 before averaging.
How is this different from the college page?
College GPA converts letter grades on a 4.0 scale and does not add an honors bonus.
