Formula
The Epley estimate is:
1RM = weight × (1 + reps / 30)
A set of one repetition returns the weight you entered. The page rounds the estimate to one decimal kilogram and does not apply another formula such as Brzycki.
Assumptions
- The set is done with a consistent, complete range of motion.
- Repetitions above 10 are rejected because the estimate drifts further from a true single.
- The weight unit stays kilograms. This page does not convert pounds.
Worked example
100 kilograms for 5 repetitions estimates a one-rep max of 116.7 kilograms.
Input definitions
- Weight lifted
- The load used for the set, in kilograms.
- Repetitions
- Completed repetitions from 1 to 10.
Limitations
An estimate is not a tested maximum and is not a load you should attempt. Warm-up, form, and recovery are outside this formula.
Questions
What happens at one repetition?
The result is the same weight. The formula is only used from 2 to 10 repetitions.
Is this a strength grade?
No. It does not compare you with other lifters or recommend a training weight.
