Formula
The stream bitrate is held for the whole sitting:
GB = Mbps × hours × 3,600 / 8 / 1,000
The data-transfer page multiplies a daily habit by a number of days. This page is one continuous watch.
Assumptions
- The bitrate does not change with the scene.
- One viewer is watching.
- Hours can include a fraction.
Worked example
A 5 Mbps stream watched for 3 hours uses 6.75 GB.
Input definitions
- Stream bitrate
- The megabits per second the player is receiving, not the file's stored bitrate unless they match.
- Hours watched
- The length of that one sitting.
Limitations
This is a planning figure from the numbers you type. It is not a measurement of a network, a camera, a printer, or a power supply.
Questions
Where do several days go?
On the data-transfer page, which repeats an average speed across days.
Does a higher resolution always mean more data?
Only if the bitrate is higher. Type the bitrate the stream actually uses.
