Formula
The deadline is the divisor:
Mbps = bytes × 8 / seconds / 1,000,000
The download page starts from a speed and answers the time. This page starts from the time and answers the speed.
Assumptions
- The whole window is available to the file.
- The size is decimal gigabytes.
- No overhead is added.
Worked example
A 2 GB file that must finish in 120 seconds needs 133.33 Mbps.
Input definitions
- Time allowed
- How many seconds the transfer may take.
- Speed required
- The steady megabits per second that meet that deadline.
Limitations
This is a planning figure from the numbers you type. It is not a measurement of a network, a camera, a printer, or a power supply.
Questions
Does this include overhead?
No. Raise the result yourself, or use the upload page when you already know the speed and want overhead removed.
Why start from seconds?
A deadline is a different question from a speed test. The download page cannot be run backward from this form.
