Video Storage Calculator

See how many hours of a bitrate fit in a decimal gigabyte capacity.

Your inputs

GB
Mbps

Hours that fit

277.78 h

The drive's bits divided by the bitrate, then by 3,600. One file's size is a different page.

Hours
277.78

Formula

Capacity becomes bits, then hours:

hours = gigabytes × 1,000,000,000 × 8 / Mbps / 1,000,000 / 3,600

The file-size page is one recording. This page is the drive.

Assumptions

  • The bitrate stays constant.
  • The capacity is entirely available to video.
  • Units are decimal.

Worked example

1,000 GB at 8 Mbps holds 277.78 h of video.

Input definitions

Capacity
Decimal gigabytes free for the recordings.
Bitrate
Megabits per second of the video you intend to store.

Limitations

This is a planning figure from the numbers you type. It is not a measurement of a network, a camera, a printer, or a power supply.

Questions

Where is a single file?

On the video file-size page, which multiplies one bitrate by one duration.

Does audio need its own bitrate?

Add it to the megabits before you type them, or use the recording-time page, which has a separate audio field.
