Formula
Seconds are the bits in the file divided by bits per second:
seconds = gigabytes × 1,000,000,000 × 8 / Mbps / 1,000,000
The clock rounds to the nearest second. The bitrate page divides size by a known duration instead.
Assumptions
- The bitrate is the average, including audio if it is part of that average.
- The gigabyte is decimal.
- Playback is the whole file.
Worked example
A 2 GB file at 8 Mbps plays for 33:20.
Input definitions
- File size
- Decimal gigabytes stored.
- Bitrate
- Megabits per second used to turn that size into time.
Limitations
This is a planning figure from the numbers you type. It is not a measurement of a network, a camera, a printer, or a power supply.
Questions
How is this different from the bitrate page?
That page knows the length and solves for megabits. This page knows the megabits and solves for the length.
Why a clock instead of seconds?
The same seconds are shown in minutes, rounded to the nearest second.
