Formula
The file is turned back into bits per second:
Mbps = gigabytes × 1,000,000,000 × 8 / seconds / 1,000,000
The video file-size page multiplies a bitrate by a duration. This page divides a finished file by its duration.
Assumptions
- The gigabyte is decimal.
- The bitrate is an average over the whole file.
- Audio inside the file is included in the size, so it is inside the average.
Worked example
A 1.5 GB file that lasts 600 seconds averages 20 Mbps.
Input definitions
- File size
- The stored size, in decimal gigabytes.
- Duration
- The playback length in seconds.
Limitations
This is a planning figure from the numbers you type. It is not a measurement of a network, a camera, a printer, or a power supply.
Questions
Why is this not the file-size page?
That page starts from bitrate and time. This page starts from a file that already exists.
Does the average hide peaks?
Yes. A variable bitrate can spike above the average this division reports.
