Formula
The discount is a percent of the original price, rounded to the nearest cent:
Sale price = original price − (original price × discount)
A 100% discount makes the sale price zero. A 0% discount leaves the original price.
Assumptions
- One discount applies to the whole price.
- The discount is a percent, not a coupon code.
Worked example
25.00% off $80.00 makes a sale price of $60.00.
Input definitions
- Original price
- The price before the discount.
- Discount
- The percent removed, from 0 to 100.
Limitations
This is one price and one percent. It does not stack coupons or apply a tax.
Questions
Is this the same as a margin?
No. A discount reduces a price the buyer pays. A margin is the share of a price left after cost.
Can the sale price be zero?
Yes. A 100% discount leaves a sale price of zero.
