Formula
A decimal gigabyte holds 1,000 megabytes:
files = capacity GB × 1,000 / file MB
The count can be fractional because the last file may not fill a whole slot in this division. Game counts round down and are a different page.
Assumptions
- Both units are decimal, not 1,024-based.
- Every file is the same size.
- The filesystem's own overhead is not reserved.
Worked example
A 1,000 GB drive holding 25 MB files fits 40,000 files.
Input definitions
- Capacity
- The gigabytes you are willing to fill.
- Each file
- The megabytes of one file, repeated until the capacity is used.
Limitations
This is a planning figure from the numbers you type. It is not a measurement of a network, a camera, a printer, or a power supply.
Questions
Why not gibibytes?
The page uses 1,000 so it matches decimal drive labels. The data-storage page converts a decimal terabyte into tebibytes.
Where do whole games go?
The game storage page divides free space by one game and rounds down to a whole game.
