Formula
The two thousands are different powers:
TiB = TB × 1,000⁴ / 1,024⁴
File counts on the storage page stay in decimal gigabytes. This page only reconciles the two names for a trillion-scale size.
Assumptions
- The terabyte is 10¹² bytes.
- The tebibyte is 2⁴⁰ bytes.
- Nothing is rounded until the result is shown to three decimal places.
Worked example
1 TB on a drive label is 0.909 TiB.
Input definitions
- Terabyte
- 1,000,000,000,000 bytes, the decimal unit.
- Tebibyte
- 1,099,511,627,776 bytes, the binary unit.
Limitations
This is a planning figure from the numbers you type. It is not a measurement of a network, a camera, a printer, or a power supply.
Questions
Why is one terabyte less than one tebibyte?
1,024 is larger than 1,000, and the difference is raised to the fourth power. The same byte count is therefore a smaller tebibyte number.
Does the operating system use this?
Some systems label 2⁴⁰ bytes as 1 TB. This page shows both definitions so the label and the binary count can be compared.
