Formula
Inches are converted, then the cartons multiply:
cubic feet = length × width × height / 1728 × cartons
The CBM page uses centimeters and cubic meters. The dimensional-weight page divides this kind of volume by a divisor and compares it with a scale weight.
Assumptions
- Dimensions are inches.
- Every carton matches.
- The volume includes the air inside each carton.
Worked example
Ten cartons of 24 by 18 by 12 inches are 30 ft³.
Input definitions
- Cubic foot
- 1,728 cubic inches.
Limitations
Pallets and void fill between cartons are not added. This volume is not yet a billable weight.
Questions
Why is one carton 3 cubic feet?
24 times 18 times 12 is 5,184 cubic inches. Divided by 1,728 that is 3. Ten cartons are 30.
Is this volumetric weight?
No. Volumetric weight divides centimeters by a divisor such as 5,000 and reports kilograms.
