Formula
One megapixel is one million pixels:
MP = width × height / 1,000,000
The file-size page multiplies those pixels by channels and bits. The image-size page starts from a megapixel count and a ratio and finds the sides.
Assumptions
- Every pixel counts once.
- There is no crop.
- The result uses a decimal million.
Worked example
A 6000 by 4000 frame is 24 MP.
Input definitions
- Width
- Pixels across the frame.
- Height
- Pixels down the frame.
Limitations
This is a planning figure from the numbers you type. It is not a measurement of a network, a camera, a printer, or a power supply.
Questions
Does this include the file size?
No. Pixels are not bytes. The file-size page adds channels and bit depth.
Can I start from 24 MP?
Yes, on the image-size page, which splits a megapixel count by an aspect ratio.
