Formula
The width is the square root of the pixel count times the ratio:
width = √(megapixels × 1,000,000 × ratio width / ratio height)
Height follows from the ratio. The aspect-ratio page reduces two pixel sides. This page creates the sides.
Assumptions
- The ratio is width to height.
- Pixels are rounded to whole pixels for the result.
- The megapixel count is decimal millions.
Worked example
24 megapixels at a 3:2 ratio is a 6,000 × 4,000 px frame.
Input definitions
- Megapixels
- How many millions of pixels the frame should hold.
- Ratio
- The shape, entered as two whole numbers such as 3 and 2.
Limitations
This is a planning figure from the numbers you type. It is not a measurement of a network, a camera, a printer, or a power supply.
Questions
Why is 24 MP at 3:2 equal to 6000 by 4000?
6000 times 4000 is 24 million, and 6000:4000 reduces to 3:2.
What if I already know both sides?
Use the megapixel page. It multiplies them.
