FPS Calculator

See how many rendered frames a monitor can actually show.

Your inputs

fps
Hz

Frames shown

144 fps

36 rendered frames each second are above the refresh. Frame time in milliseconds is a different page.

Shown
144 fps
Unused
36

Formula

The screen cannot display more frames than its refresh:

shown = minimum(rendered fps, refresh Hz)

Frames above the refresh are unused by the panel. The frame-time page converts one rate into milliseconds and does not compare it with a monitor.

Assumptions

  • There is no frame generation beyond the rendered count you type.
  • The refresh is the panel's, in hertz.
  • Sync modes are not modeled.

Worked example

180 rendered frames on a 144 Hz monitor shows 144 fps.

Input definitions

Rendered frames
Frames per second the game produces.
Refresh
How many times per second the monitor draws a new image.

Limitations

This is a planning figure from the numbers you type. It is not a measurement of a network, a camera, a printer, or a power supply.

Questions

Where do the extra 36 frames go?

They are rendered and not shown, in this comparison. The page does not decide whether that headroom is useful.

What is a millisecond per frame?

1,000 divided by a frame rate, on the frame-time page.
