Formula
Tax is the price multiplied by the rate you enter, rounded to the nearest cent:
Tax = price × tax rate
The total is the original price plus that tax. No item is exempt unless you leave it out of the price.
Assumptions
- One rate applies to the whole price.
- The rate is a percent, not a tax-authority code.
- Rounding uses the nearest cent.
Worked example
A $49.99 price at 8.25% adds $4.12 and totals $54.11.
Input definitions
- Price before tax
- The shelf price, with no tax included.
- Tax rate
- The percent you want to apply. It is not looked up from a city or country.
Limitations
This is a generic percentage. It is not a sales-tax filing, and it does not know local rates, exemptions, or a tax year.
Questions
Will this use my location?
No. You type the rate. The calculator does not detect a city, state, or country.
Can the rate be zero?
Yes. The total then equals the price before tax.
