Formula
Average velocity on a straight path is the change in position over time:
m/s = meters / seconds
The running-speed page answers a road distance in km/h. This page stays in SI units.
Assumptions
- Distance is meters and time is seconds.
- The result is an average, not an instantaneous velocity.
Worked example
100 m in 10 s is 10 m/s.
Input definitions
- Distance
- How far, in meters.
- Time
- How long that distance took, in seconds.
Limitations
This is a classroom calculation. It is not a laboratory procedure, a wiring plan, or a measured instrument reading.
Questions
Is velocity the same as speed here?
This page uses a positive distance, so the result is the average speed along the path.
How do I get km/h?
Multiply m/s by 3.6, or use the meters-per-second conversion page.
