Formula
The conventional atomic weights used here are H 1.008, C 12.011, N 14.007, O 15.999, Na 22.990, S 32.06, Cl 35.45, and Ca 40.078:
g/mol = Σ (atomic weight × atom count)
A zero count skips that row. The mole page divides a measured mass by this kind of molar mass. Isotopes and interval weights are not expanded.
Assumptions
- Each row is one element and its atom count.
- The weights are the conventional textbook values listed above.
Worked example
Six carbons, twelve hydrogens, and six oxygens total 180.156 g/mol.
Input definitions
- Element
- One of the eight elements in the list.
- Atoms
- How many of that element are in the formula.
Limitations
This is a classroom calculation. It is not a laboratory procedure, a wiring plan, or a measured instrument reading.
Questions
Is this a full formula parser?
No. You choose up to three elements and type their counts.
Why is chlorine 35.45?
That is the conventional atomic weight, which averages the common isotopes.
