Formula
Slope is the change in y divided by the change in x:
Slope = (y2 − y1) / (x2 − x1)
A vertical line has no slope. Equal x values are rejected.
Assumptions
- The two x values are different.
- The points use the same coordinate scale.
Worked example
The slope from (1, 2) to (4, 8) is 2.
Input definitions
- First point
- x1 and y1.
- Second point
- x2 and y2.
Limitations
Results are rounded for display. This is a classroom calculation, not a measurement from a lab or a financial filing.
Questions
What does a negative slope mean?
The line falls as x increases.
Where do I use this slope?
Type it into the linear-equation page with an intercept to evaluate y.
