Formula
Pace is the time divided by the distance:
pace = total seconds / distance
The display rounds that result to the nearest second and writes it as minutes:seconds. Speed is distance divided by hours.
Assumptions
- The clock starts at the beginning of the distance and stops at the end.
- Kilometers and miles are not converted into each other on this page.
- The result is an average pace, not a split for each part of the run.
Worked example
5 kilometers in 25 minutes is a pace of 5:00 per kilometer, which is 12 km/h.
Input definitions
- Distance
- How far the run was, in the selected unit.
- Time
- Hours, minutes, and seconds. At least one second is required.
Limitations
Pace does not estimate calories, fitness, or a safe training load.
Questions
Does this convert kilometers to miles?
No. The pace uses the unit you select. A 5 kilometer result is not a 5 mile result.
Why can the seconds differ from a watch?
The page rounds the average pace to the nearest second.
