Formula
P. Boer published separate adult equations in 1984, with height in centimeters and weight in kilograms:
Male kg = 0.407×weight + 0.267×height − 19.2
The female equation is 0.252×weight + 0.473×height − 48.3. Lean mass here is the equation result, not fat-free mass from a scan.
Assumptions
- The equations were fit on adults.
- They do not measure bone, water, or muscle separately.
Worked example
The male equation at 80 kg and 180 cm estimates 61.4 kg of lean mass.
Input definitions
- Weight
- Body weight in kilograms.
- Height
- Standing height in centimeters.
Limitations
This is an informational estimate for adults. It is not a diagnosis, a diet plan, or a training prescription. Pregnancy, illness, and medication can change what is appropriate.
Questions
Is lean mass the same as muscle?
No. The equation estimates a fat-free body size. It does not isolate muscle.
Why not subtract the Navy body-fat percent?
That would be a different method. This page uses only the Boer weight-and-height equation.
