Formula
Each time becomes minutes after midnight. If the end is earlier, it falls on the next day:
Duration = end minutes − start minutes
A 24-hour clock is used. 17:45 is 5:45 in the afternoon.
Assumptions
- Hours run from 0 to 23 and minutes from 0 to 59.
- An earlier end time crosses midnight once.
Worked example
From 9:15 to 17:45 is 8 h 30 min.
Input definitions
- Start hour and minute
- The first clock time, in 24-hour form.
- End hour and minute
- The second clock time. An earlier clock is treated as the next day.
Limitations
Time zones and dates are not compared. Two calendar dates belong on the date-difference page, and a repeating work schedule belongs on the work-hours page.
Questions
What if I work past midnight?
Enter the later clock as the end. A 22:00 start and a 6:00 end is 8 hours.
Can both times match?
Yes. The duration is 0 h 00 min.
