Formula
The gram weight is the USDA FoodData Central household cup for the ingredient you pick. All-purpose flour is 125 g (FDC 168894), granulated sugar 200 g (FDC 169655), butter 227 g (FDC 173410), honey 339 g (FDC 169640), rolled oats 156 g (FDC 169705), and raw long-grain white rice 185 g (FDC 168877).
grams = tablespoons × USDA grams per cup / 16
A US cup contains 16 tablespoons. This page divides the cup weight by 16 rather than looking up a separate spoon row.
Assumptions
- The cup is the USDA household cup used in those records.
- The ingredient is the plain food named in the list.
- The result is a kitchen weight, not a laboratory density at a stated temperature.
Worked example
1 tablespoon of all-purpose flour weighs 7.8125 g.
Input definitions
- Tablespoons
- How much of the chosen ingredient you measured.
- Ingredient
- The food whose USDA cup weight is used.
Limitations
A heaped tablespoon is not one-sixteenth of a leveled cup. Butter is often marked on the wrapper in tablespoons, and 16 of those tablespoons are the 227 g cup.
