Formula
Cost per serving rounds to the nearest cent:
each = round((ingredients + packaging) / servings)
The currency menu formats the same cent total. It does not convert an exchange rate. Labor, energy, and overhead are not included.
Assumptions
- Ingredient cost is greater than zero. Packaging may be zero.
- A serving is one equal portion of the finished batch.
- Cents are the calculation unit. Half a cent rounds away from zero with standard half-up rounding.
Worked example
Ingredients of $12.40 and packaging of $1.60, split across 8 servings, cost $1.75 per serving.
Input definitions
- Ingredient cost
- What the food in the batch cost.
- Packaging
- Containers or wraps for the batch. Enter 0 if there are none.
- Servings
- How many portions you divide the batch into.
Limitations
This is a batch cost, not a menu price. It does not add tax, labor, rent, or a target margin.
Questions
Why does changing the currency keep the same number?
The menu only changes the symbol and grouping. It does not look up an exchange rate.
Can packaging be zero?
Yes. The batch is then the ingredient cost alone.
