Formula
The factor is a coverage, not a density of a loose pile:
tons = wall area / 40
Forty square feet per ton is a planning figure for natural stone veneer. Gravel weight uses a cubic-foot density instead.
Assumptions
- The stone is thin veneer, not a structural wall.
- One ton covers about 40 square feet.
- The ton is 2,000 pounds.
Worked example
200 square feet of veneer is 5 t.
Input definitions
- Coverage
- How much wall one short ton of veneer is planned to cover.
Limitations
Thickness, joint width, and the quarry's own coverage replace this 40. Corners are often sold by the linear foot and are not included.
Questions
Why 40 square feet?
It is a common supplier planning factor for veneer around 1.5 inches thick. Use the number on the pallet if it differs.
Is this crushed stone for a driveway?
No. Driveway stone is a volume and a weight. Use the gravel page for that pile.
