Formula
The face that includes the joint is 21 square inches:
bricks = wall area × 144 / 21
144 converts the wall from square feet to square inches. The result is the exact face count. The order stat rounds up.
Assumptions
- The brick is the modular size, 7-5/8 by 2-1/4 by 3-5/8 inches.
- The joint is 3/8 inch.
- The wall is one wythe in running bond.
Worked example
100 square feet of modular brick is 685.7 bricks.
Input definitions
- Wythe
- One thickness of brick. A double wall is not included.
- Face with joint
- Brick length plus one head joint, times brick height plus one bed joint.
Limitations
Openings, corners, and a different brick size are not deducted or added. Mortar volume is a separate page.
Questions

8 inches times 2.625 inches is 21. That is the modular brick plus a 3/8 inch joint on the length and the height.
Does this include mortar?
Only as the joint size that spaces the bricks. The mortar page estimates the cubic feet.
