Formula
The page rounds up to a whole box:
boxes = ceil(area × (1 + waste / 100) / coverage)
This is a package count. The flooring page stops at square feet, and the tile page counts individual tiles.
Assumptions
- Coverage is square feet per box, as printed.
- Waste is applied to the room before the boxes are divided.
- A partial box is bought whole.
Worked example
200 square feet with 10% waste, in boxes that cover 20 square feet, needs 11 boxes.
Input definitions
- Coverage
- The square feet one unopened box is sold to cover.
Limitations
A printed coverage that already includes waste should be paired with a waste entry of zero, or you will add waste twice.
Questions
Why not 10 boxes?
200 square feet is 10 boxes only before waste. Ten percent makes 220, which is 11 boxes of 20.
Is a box the same as a tile?
No. A box holds many planks and publishes one coverage number.
