Formula
US gallons use miles per gallon. Liters use the fuel needed for 100 kilometers:
MPG = miles / gallons; L/100 km = liters / kilometers × 100
One US gallon is 3.785411784 liters and one international mile is 1.609344 kilometers. Kilometers per liter is the same result read the other way, so it is not another page. Tank range is economy times the fuel still in the tank.
Assumptions
- The gallon is the US gallon, not the imperial gallon.
- Distance and fuel describe the same trip.
- The result is what was used, not a manufacturer's test cycle.
Worked example
300 miles on 10 gallons is 30 MPG.
Input definitions
- Distance
- Miles in the US pair, or kilometers in the metric pair.
- Fuel used
- US gallons or liters burned over that distance.
Limitations
This does not estimate a future trip, a different load, or idling that was not in the fuel you entered. Fuel cost is a separate page because it also needs a price.
Questions
Why can the same trip show three numbers?
Miles per gallon, liters per 100 kilometers, and kilometers per liter describe one consumption. The page converts them with the US gallon and the international mile.
How far will a full tank go?
Multiply the economy by the fuel in the tank. The fuel trip page counts how many of those tanks a distance needs. This page only reports the economy of fuel already used.
